Tourism

Rhode Island's nickname is "The Ocean State", and it is well deserved. Because of its unique shape and coastal location, Rhode Island has over 400 miles of spectacularly beautiful coastline - the biggest proportion of coastline to total area of any state in the nation.

Our state offers many great beaches, water sports and activities of all kinds, including boating, fishing, wind surfing, and scuba diving. Tourism has long been a key industry in RI, and tourism operators and service providers are well prepared to make sure you have a wonderful time and visit RI again!

Rhode Island is steeped in history, as one of the original 13 colonies that ultimately joined to form the United States of America. So its history is much older than that of the US. There are many great historical sites to visit. For example, Fort Adams in Newport - complete with real cannon from the Revolutionary War - protected Newport Harbor from the British Navy during the American Revolution. Slater Mill is recognized as the site that launched the American industrial revolution in the late 18th century. Today's RI offers a beautiful state with something for everyone who loves the great outdoors. RI offers world-class accommodations to suit every taste and budget from the shores of Westerly to the busy streets of downtown Providence. RI is gaining a world-wide reputation for having some of the most exciting (and tasty) restaurants in the US! We have great museums, including the RISD Museum of Art, located at the #1 Art School in America, the Rhode Island School of Design. For those who like an exciting night-life and gambling, the Twin River Casino offers full slot machine and table gaming fun (and Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun in CT are less than an hour away by car!). RI excels in the Arts - take in a show at the Tony-award winning Trinity Repertory Theater, or the Gamm Theater, the Ocean State Theater, or the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra.
